The Englishman, George Hogg, saves late thirties in China sixty orphaned children’s lives, as he flees with them along the silk road in front of the Japanese. Roger Spottiswoode has turned the true story of the brilliant Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the lead role and is given by a fantastic camera settings the war, a fascinating face.
, The English journalist George Hogg (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is inexperienced in 1937 as a war correspondent for China, which has suffered under the occupation of Japan. At the very beginning, he is confronted with a mass shooting of civilians and fell into the clutches of the Japanese. During the rescue operation by the Chinese resistance fighter Jack Chen (Chow Yun-Fat) was seriously injured and is in the care of the brusque, “Doctor,” Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell) who falls instantly in love. But in times of war, this feeling is no place and instead Hogg is sent to convalesce in a remote place. There waiting for him sixty children in an orphanage. Implication is expected by Hogg that he was preparing them, their homes and provides protection and assistance. After initial hesitation, can the two Englishmen on it and found within a few months, the unbelievable: The children have full confidence in him and are excited about his classes and his innovations. However, near the kriegswütigen Japanese, and Hogg and his children is only the flight. In the dead of winter to overcome a distance of 1000 kilometers, for where there is a will, there’s a way. Needless to cross paths again and again by George Hogg, Jack Chen and Lee Pearson, many dangers to be overcome and love but now gets a chance. And then it comes back everything is different than expected …
The English Patient will get through The Children of the Silk Road serious competition. What unites the two films, which are acts of war and raising awareness of the difficulties of love in such exceptional situations. Both films also show that it was always do-gooders who retained their humanity in times of lawlessness. Jonathan Rhys Meyers as a brave and above all well-bred gentleman, George Hogg defies evil against everything. If the movie is not based on a true story would be, then one could accuse the writer, he had all taken up much in the trash box. But at the latest during the credits of the film will be set right, because some of the surviving children – now in its old age – to hold true praise of the journalists, photographers, teachers and life-saver, George Hogg, on which was suspended apparently nothing. Selfless, his behavior was in any case, any time dangerous and heroic as well. All this combined with an incredibly British politeness fits like a glove on the Irishman Jonathan Rhys Meyers who places himself with tousled hair, thick cotton trousers and wool scarf an incredible elegance to the big screen. Not only that, but in the desperate moments, when he witnesses a mass execution, panic at the supposed beheading shows and emotionally warm turn our attention to the little boy (or lover), all this seems less geschauspielert rather than to come directly from the man’s soul. A better cast could hardly Roger Spottiswoode can be found for the role of George Hogg. The fact that many, perhaps a little too kitschy coming over will be fortunately, the opposite poles created by Radha Mitchell and Chow Yun-Fat straightened out again. For the shine as harsh and brusque figures that need Jonathan Rhys Meyers as gooder necessarily at his side. Even the great camera angles and dreamlike landscapes are a major advantage of this drama, because the camera is directed in the most unusual perspectives on seemingly inconsequential and conjures up this most unusual of days.
Children of the Silk Road lives next to the international movie star, but mainly from the many child actors who are trained in real life, partly for the Beijing opera. From this Asian art form is nothing to see in the film, because they impress mainly by their naturalness and their absolute camera capability. Whether the boys are still in nursery school or already young adults, they are the true makers of the film. This was known to Roger Spottiswoode, who said before the casting, that they would be crucial for the success of the film. With well-considered head he has picked out the right actors, the main characters almost steal the show. If this would not last always tragic love stories in historical films such withdrawal, then it would be a great movie. But love is selling very well.
